In a new blog post today, Microsoft’s Tastia Ebacher explained how Microsoft is handling junk mail on Outlook 2016 for the Mac. As expected, Outlook 2016 for Mac will come with a handful of new features compared to Outlook 2011 for Mac. The upcoming Outlook update relies on server-side filtering for junk mail, rather than relying on client-side filtering. Microsoft expects server-side filtering to cut down on your junk mail, and hopefully Outlook 2016 for Mac will improve junk mail filtering.
- The online archive folder, available from the Outlook for Mac 2016 navigation pane, provides access to the archived messages, when required, while trimming the actual mailbox's size.
- This applies to Outlook for Windows (at least 2007 to 2016 versions) and Outlook for Mac. Crucially, Exchange Server 2016 and earlier which only use the supplied spam filter will also be left without updates.
- In order to disable Outlook Junk Email Filter on Outlook 2011 for Mac, navigate to Junk > Junk E-mail Protection, select None and click Ok: Note: Outlook 2016 does not support client-side mail filtering.
Microsoft has also published a comparison of Outlook for Mac 2011 and Outlook 2016 for Mac junk email protection options:
